Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Courts meet to discuss reforms necessary for European integration at AIRE Centre training event in Sarajevo

13 November 2014

Seminar on Article 5

‘The Right to Liberty and Security of a Person’

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

On the 13th and 14th November the AIRE Centre from London and the Judicial Training Centre of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBIH) will organise a seminar for the senior advisors and lawyers of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH) and Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH).

The event marks the launch of the two-year project ‘Strengthening the Judiciary of Bosnia and Herzegovina for the EU Integration’, implemented by the AIRE Centre and funded by the British Embassy in Sarajevo. President of the Constitutional Court of BIH, Valerija Galic, President of the Court of BIH, Meddzida Kreso, British Ambassador in Sarajevo, Edward Ferguson, and Programme Manager for the Western Balkans at the AIRE Centre, Biljana Braithwaite, opened the session.

Announcing the seminar, Biljana Braithwaite said:  “The seminar will focus on reforms that will improve the functionality of Bosnia’s court system, strengthen the rule of law in the country, and help the process of European integration”.

The introductory speeches also provided the opportunity to roll out the regional Database of ECHR jurisprudence, available in regional languages, across all the BIH courts. The Database is a tool that provides judges, prosecutors and other legal practitioners with easy and free access to ECHR jurisprudence in their own languages. The Database has been developed with the support from the UK Foreign and Commonwealth office.
