European Roma Rights In Action: The AIRE Centre Project Launch

4 March 2015

The AIRE Centre is proud to announce the launch of its new pilot project, European Roma Rights in Action, generously funded by the Open Society Initiative.

Roma migrants in the UK live in a hostile environment – many are excluded from society, unable to access education, healthcare, housing, employment and social assistance. Often they are unaware of their rights as EU citizens.

As a response to this frustrating situation, The AIRE Centre is proud to launch a new pilot project European Roma Rights in Action, generously funded by the Open Society Initiative.

This one year project aims to develop the capacity of NGOs, local authorities and legal practitioners who work with Roma migrants, as well as the migrants themselves, through free training sessions.

This project will allow us to continue to empower Roma migrants and their advocates and inform them about their rights under EU law. In the face of a rising pan-European climate of racism, fear of the different and discrimination, this work is ever more important.

The European Roma Rights in Action project will complement our current Roma Rights Project, funded by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust.

The European Roma Rights in Action Project is coordinated by Markella Papadouli, Legal Project Manager, with the support of Roma lawyer Denisa Psenickova.
