These submissions, made jointly by the AIRE Centre and Kalayaan, are made in response to the Joint Committee on Human Rights’ call for evidence on the UK’s positive obligations to investigate allegations of slavery, servitude, forced or compulsory labour, following the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in C.N. v the United Kingdom (Application No. 4239/08) in which the AIRE Centre was a third party intervener.

The AIRE Centre contributes to the Handbook on European Law Relating to Asylum, Borders and Immigration
A collaboration between the AIRE Centre, the EU Fundamental Rights Agency and the European Court of Human Rights, the handbook is a first point of reference on both European Union (EU) and European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) law related to asylum, border management and immigration. It explains how each issue is regulated under EU law as well as under the ECHR, the European Social Charter (ESC) and other instruments of the Council of Europe.

Information Note on the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking on Human Beings and Non Punishment of Trafficking Victims
‘The Anti-Trafficking Convention’ (2005) was ratified by the United Kingdom on 17 December 2008 and entered into force on 1 April 2009. This Convention has now been acceded to by 39 of the Council of Europe Member States. It has also been signed, but not ratified, by four other Member States.

UK Supreme Court Judgment in Patmalniece
On Wednesday 16 March 2011 the Supreme Court handed down its judgment in the Patmalniece case, involving the application of the right-to-reside test to certain benefits in the UK. The AIRE Centre intervened in the case, in which the Supreme Court found that the right-to-reside test was lawful.
